11:38 pm - Maybe tomorrow is a lifetime away...
Wow.

From the Aznar/Bush conversation translation:
The Egyptians are talking to Saddam Hussein. It seems that he’s indicated that he’s willing to go into exile if they let him take 1 billion dollars with him, and all the information that he wants about the weapons of mass destruction.

I grabbed today's Post-Gazette off one of the other tables at the Beehive this morning. 42 billion dollars more for Iraq next year, or something like that.

Think 42 minus 1 is enough billion dollars to have rebuilt New Orleans? Maybe a couple bridges? Feed a couple hungry people?

This is what I get for reading news. I'll stop now.

Besides, I need to pack. [info]ma3d is getting married on the left side of the country...

Man ... think of all that could have been paid for. Health care. New air traffic control system. Better roads. More funding for Amtrak. Funding for a REPLACEMENT for Amtrak. I don't understand the theory that government investment at home is wasted money, while government "investment" in a civil war is money well spent.

You can't use it to buy health care. That's communist. We're fighting against that. Or something.

This makes me sick. $60 Billion so kids can have healthcare is way too much and is an incremental step towards the Feds running health care, but a request for billions more than that for Iraq is a-okand will only last a few months, and he'll ask for more, and the Democratic controlled Congress will give it to him! Who are they trying to fool? There are some who will believe it but anybody with half a brain can see right through Bush Co's BS.

As Al Bundy once asked: "Can you taste the bile?"

Let him take a billion with him -- as in, not even US funds?

No wonder we needed to invade right away. Imagine public opinion if Saddam went on CNN to say "for the good of my country, and to spare my citizens further and ongoing brutality from the United States, I am leaving."

As far as I can tell, back when this whole mess started, they truly believed that we could kick over the country and install a new puppet government more to our liking in a few weeks with a few million dollars.

They were incredibly wrong, and plenty of people said so back then, but that doesn't matter. What matters is that THEY believed it. Based on that belief, a billion-dollar payoff was a terrible deal.

The terrifying part is that they're still running the show, and the new politicians in congress are just as spineless as the old. They can all get together to pass meaningless resolutions opposing free speech confrontational political advertising, but they can't agree to stop the clusterfuck that was responsible for their elections.
